The science of eye gazing dates back to 1800’s, when the Hungarian physician Iqnatz van Peczley discover that the changes in one eye of an owl with broken leg disappeared when the owl recovered.  Following his discovering, he set to work systematically examining eyes and noting a system of diagnostic methods that came to form modern day iridology.

Van Peczley discovered that the iris could be divided into 12 areas, which he termed segments. These areas run from the central pupil out to the periphery and relate to specific areas of the body.

Changes in a particular segment reflect the health or disease in that organ or tissue. In additional to the area relating to different part of the body the color of the iris indicates the patient’s general level of health. His or her constitution can therefore be assessed by careful examination of the iris and specific health problems can be detected often before external symptoms of disease can be felt or seen.

How can the eye indicate disease  in the body?

Iridology theory states that no part of the body functions in isolation. Every organ and every tissues is in contact with every other part of the body. The eye is a convenient and easily visible indicator of health. With its ample nerve and blood supply, the eye can reflect very early signs of disease in distant body organ, making it useful diagnostic tool, especially for those not wanting to undergo conventional test such as X ry s and bloods tests.

Bernard Jensen, D.C. (1908-2001), the leading American iridologist, stated that "Nature has provided us with a miniature television screen showing the most remote portions of the body by way of nerve reflex responses." He also claimed that iridology analyses are more reliable and "offer much more information about the state of the body than do the examinations of Western medicine."

A British iridology organization states that there are three main "constitutional types" of iris color:

1.The blue eyed constitution ("lymphatic type"), whose "inherent tendencies" include: "Re-activity of the lymphatic system (adenoid and tonsil irritations; splenitis; swollen lymph nodes; irritated appendix; catarrh with exudations; eczema; acne; flakey, dry skin; dandruff; asthma; coughs; bronchitis; sinusitis; diarrhoea; arthritis; vaginal discharge; eye irritations; fluid retention."

2.The "pure brown eyed constitution ("haematogenic type"), whose "inherent tendencies" include: "Anaemia; lack of catalysts (iron, gold, arsenic, copper, zinc, iodine); blood diseases (hepatitis, Jaundice); muscle spasms; arthritis; chronic degenerative illness; endocrine disorders (thyroid, adrenals & pituitary); spleenic disturbances; poor lymphatic drainage; swollen glands; Hodgkin's Disease; flatulance; constipation; colonic tumour; dyspepsia; digestive disorders with lowered enzymatic production; frequent intolerance to cows milk; ulcers; liver.
